René Muré is the only high-class domaine where I've done so (and they produced more than one) - perhaps they are one of the 7 out of 11? So, it seems I definitely underestimated the production of Crémant at small producers!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7843241176654658673.post-72495796176291455652014-11-07T23:49:05.011+01:002014-11-07T23:49:05.011+01:00Good point! We would have to ask Etienne Hugel, but I think the logistics and space would be limiting. Also, firms such as Dopff au Moulin and Wolfberger are already huge in crémant, which probably is a somewhat different market than still wines with a barrier of entry. But if we look at the domaines ranked *** by La Revue de Vins de France, 2/5 make crémant (Boxler, Albert Mann). Of the ** domaines 7/11 have bubbles on their card, as well as most of the * domaines. alsace-winehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16420090795821899422noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7843241176654658673.post-45774139884766665712014-11-07T23:27:08.282+01:002014-11-07T23:27:08.282+01:00Hello Per, since you mentioned the subject of Crém...Hello Per, since you mentioned the subject of Crémant d'Alsace and its importance in general to the region, I'd like to ask you: is there any specific reason why almost none of the "big name" négociants or the most well-known domaines seem to produce Crémant? Mader’s 2009 Riesling Rosacker will accompany Saturday’s lunch.
It opens up immediately with ripe grilled lemons and lovely developed petroleum. It’s obviously not sweet but incredibly rich. The fresh acidity does manage the almost fleshy body (14% alc.) and the balance is impeccable.
I never had such a full throttle vintage of this wine before. It’s almost more Pfalz than Alsace by style. Comparing with other reasonably recent hot vintages, 2003 was a totally different story. It seems many grapes, despite the heat and because of the drought in 2003, never reached the maturity of 2009.
And on the “manipulation”; did you ever have a premoxed wine from Alsace? Didn’t think so…
Gôuthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06998654270970606541noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7843241176654658673.post-1716148662973477162013-07-19T13:02:59.821+02:002013-07-19T13:02:59.821+02:00Jens, det låter härligt! They have no problems to sell their wines at prices that are win-win.

It is hard to decipher the codes (unless you consult my web sites or buy my book).

One funny anectode: During my visit a few weeks ago I checked if the codes I have in my book were the same as the ones on the labels. Then I found that the current Muscat was labeled L20, just as the Pinot Blanc. Confused, I asked Mrs Boxler who blushed: there was an error. It should have been L40. Maybe this label will be as valuable as the Swedish 3 Shilling Banco stamp one day.

Nevertheless, I have a lot of respect for Boxler and I think it is OK that they spend time playing football with their kids instead of working on a web site.alsace-winehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16420090795821899422noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7843241176654658673.post-46405898576881698152012-07-14T13:03:38.781+02:002012-07-14T13:03:38.781+02:00I was very impressed with the wines, as well as th...I was very impressed with the wines, as well as the reception, when I visited one year ago - and I bought this specific wine, and managed to lay my hands of 2 of the 3 others as well (one in Riquewihr, because it was sold out at the domaine).

However, I think they could have been a bit more informative with the difference between four Sommerberg selections parcellaires, to be more consumer friendly. As far as I remember they have exactly the same front label, and they are only differentiated on the back label, and then only with 1-2 letters. This one says just "JV", and "Jeune Vignes" is not spelled out. Furthermore, Boxler doesn't have a website, so there's no simple way for a consumer who buys their wines somewhere else to decipher what the letters mean. As I remember it, you don't find a full explanation in their pricelist either. To me, this is a bit oversecretive. But I cannot help getting p-d off when a great Burgundy house like D-n serves a 2001 Chablis Grand Cru Le Clos that is oxidized, and the great house B-t offers a 2002 Corton that is lean and acidic. A few nights before, I had other bad experiences. But I think we can agree that selection is everything in Burgundy, and the chances that things go wrong are much more likely in Burgundy than in Alsace. On the other hand, on night like the one you describe, you are in heaven.alsace-winehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16420090795821899422noreply@blogger.com
